An Daoquan is a physician from Jiankang Prefecture (present-day Nanjing). He inherits the medical skills and knowledge of his ancestors and makes his name for his ability to treat all kinds of illnesses. He is comparable to Hua Tuo and earns the nickname of "Divine Physician".
When Song Jiang is leading the outlaws from Liangshan Marsh to attack Daming Prefecture, he contracts a tumor on his back and becomes seriously ill. He is forced to abandon the offensive and return to Liangshan to recover. Zhang Shun's mother was down with a similar illness before and was healed by An Daoqun, so Zhang recommends An to treat Song Jiang.
Zhang Shun finds An Daoquan in Jiankang Prefecture. Initially, An Daoquan wants to take a trip to Liangshan with Zhang Shun but his lover, a prostitute named Li Qiaonu, refuses to allow him to leave. Zhang Shun overhears their conversation. That night, Zhang Shun sneaks into Li Qiaonu's room and kills her, then writes "An Daoquan is the killer" in blood on the wall near the crime scene to frame An Daoquan for the murder. An Daoquan is shocked when he learns about it. He has no choice but to follow Zhang Shun to Liangshan and become an outlaw as well.
An Daoquan cures Song Jiang's illness within 10 days and becomes the de facto physician of Liangshan. He is in charge of treating the heroes of their illnesses and wounds and earns their respect in return. He follows the heroes on their campaigns against the Liao invaders and rebel forces after they have been granted amnesty by the emperor. During the Fang La campaign, An Daoquan is summoned back to the capital city on the eve of the battle of Hangzhou to treat the emperor of his illness. He remains in Dongjing (present-day Kaifeng) for the rest of his life and becomes an imperial physician.
